The Van Roy Coffee Company was established in 1930, by a group of former wholesale grocers. The six founding partners were Anthony Van Rooy, John M. Schanz, Owen Kelly Sr., Jake Rose, Walter Kreinheder and Bret Pine.
The company began in a small rented office on West 25th Street. Starting a new company during the depression years presented a significant challenge, but the company grew based primarily on a reputation for product quality and outstanding service. Among the early customers were such local Cleveland companies as The May Company Department Stores, Standard Drug Stores, and transportation companies like the Pittsburgh Steamship Lines.
In 1938, The Van Roy Coffee Company bought the 38,000 square foot building they presently occupy. The Romanesque architectural style building is registered as a national historic landmark.
The founders of the Van Roy Coffee Company were committed to providing their customers with only the highest quality products whether it be Arabica coffee beans harvested from the Brazilian countryside, spices from the Orient, or tea from China.
Van Roy established a level of product quality with its "Hotel Coffee", a blend which is still offered today, along with other fine gourmet coffees.
The introduction of the vacuum-packed coffee-can revolutionized the coffee industry. It made national distribution of coffee possible. Brands like Chase & Sanborn, Folger's and Maxwell House grew into household names through national distribution and advertising. Many small local roasters could not compete with these larger coffee brands. In 1945, there were sixteen coffee companies located in Cleveland (including Cook Coffee and Edwards Coffee). There are now only two.
Van Roy has succeeded in spite of this national competition by roasting only the finest coffees from around the world and providing outstanding service to restaurants, country clubs, caterers and offices throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Anthony Van Rooy was the first president of the Van Roy Coffee Company. Following his death in 1938, he was succeeded by partner John M. Schanz, who eventually bought out the remaining partners. John M. Schanz Jr. joined the company in the mid-fifties and became president in 1969. He ran the company for the next 28 years and is now succeeded by his son-in-law Jeffrey S. Miller, president/CEO, and his son John M Schanz III, vice president.
Together Jeff and John are committed to the same values and traditions upon which The Van Roy Coffee Company was founded. Coffee beans are still selected in-person, "cupped" and tasted before the Van Roy Coffee Company will allow a single cup of coffee or package to reach the customer. Van Roy continues to offer a wide selection of the finest ground coffees and blends, as well as whole bean gourmet coffees, teas and spices.
Since its beginning, The Van Roy Coffee Company has been an institution in Cleveland, with its trademark coffee-can billboard on the west Shoreway, and the fresh aroma that permeates throughout the Ohio City neighborhood every time a fresh batch of coffee is roasted. Van Roy roasts and packages coffee daily ensuring that only the freshest cup of coffee reaches the customer.
We are committed to continuing The Van Roy Coffee Company tradition of providing the freshest coffee and maintaining our reputation of outstanding service.
