More than 90 years ago, The Van Roy Coffee Company began in a small rented office on West 25th Street. The company was established by a group of former wholesale grocers: Anthony Van Rooy, John M. Schanz, Owen Kelly Sr., Jake Rose, Walter Kreinheder, and Bret Pine, who soon found that starting a new company during the years of the Great Depression presented a significant challenge. Still, the company grew as a result of its reputation for quality products and outstanding service.

In 1938, The Van Roy Coffee Company bought the 38,000 square ft. building that is now registered as a national historic landmark. Cleveland residents soon came to recognize this landmark as the company’s home thanks to the iconic coffee-can mural and wonderful aroma that permeated throughout the neighborhood every time a fresh batch of coffee was roasted.

Several years ago, The Van Roy Coffee Company moved to its present home on Spring Road, where we continue to provide the outstanding coffee and service that our customers expect.

The founders of the Van Roy Coffee Company were committed to providing only the highest quality products, whether they be Arabica coffee beans harvested from the Brazilian countryside, spices from the Orient, or tea from China. We established a level of product quality with our “Hotel Coffee,” a blend that is still offered today along with other fine gourmet coffees.

Today, we continue this tradition of only the best in products and service. Coffee beans are still selected in-person, “cupped,” and tasted before we allow a single cup of coffee or package to reach the customer. We continue to offer a wide selection of the finest ground coffees and blends, as well as whole bean gourmet coffees, teas, and spices. The Van Roy Coffee Company roasts and packages coffee daily, ensuring that only the freshest cup of coffee reaches the customer.
